Oncology Inpatient Unit
Ball Memorial Hospital is committed to providing the highest quality of care to patients. The hospital's dedication to improving patient experiences is one reason it continuously measures their satisfaction by using the Press Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey.
For fiscal year 2005-2006 the Oncology Inpatient Unit ranked in the 96th percentile for patient satisfaction. The Oncology Inpatient Unit is compared to a database comprised of 355 inpatient oncology units across the country, including well known cancer institutions such as, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, The John's Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, and Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. Our patients consistently ranked their satisfaction with the care they received higher than 96 percent of the other hospitals in the database!
Patients admitted to the Inpatient Oncology Unit are cared for by a specially trained Cancer team, put together to meet the needs of patients and their family. Our registered nurses are specially trained to care for the oncology population, several have their OCN certification. Our oncology nurses provide specialized services to cancer patients, such as administration of chemotherapy, symptom and pain management, sharing of cancer information/education and discharge teaching of specific procedures.
Other team members caring for patients consist of several types of healthcare professionals. Registered nurses, pharmacists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, social workers, chaplains, case managers and dietitians work together daily to meet the needs of the patients and their families.
If your friends or relatives have colds, flu symptoms or other infectious diseases, we ask that they avoid visiting the hospital until they are better. Please check in at the nurses station to receive special permission and/or equipment to enter patient rooms.
The Oncology Inpatient Unit ensures quality patient care by promoting the highest professional standards of oncology nursing. We provide cancer treatment and symptom management to our patients while preserving the dignity and self-worth of our patients and their family.
SCOPE OF CARE
The Oncology Unit patient population consists of adolescents, adults and geriatric patients receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy at Ball Hospital. Blood therapy and antibiotic therapy is also provided while on the Inpatient Oncology Unit, and cancer patients having specific problems either from their disease or treatment process are also cared for on 5-East.
HOSPICE CARE:
Ball Memorial Hospice works in conjunction with the 5 East Oncology Unit to provide Inpatient Hospice Care to those who qualify. The Hospice team and physician guide the patient’s clinical care while the inpatient nursing staff provides highly skilled and compassionate care. This unique partnership allows for a hospital stay while the Hospice team and the 5E staff make necessary adjustments to ensure patient comfort prior to transitioning to their place of residence.
