Surgical services

The Surgical Services Department at Blackford Community Hospital provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week emergency services to the community in addition to scheduled cases accepted Monday through Friday. The surgery department is near the main entrance and operates two surgical suites, a post anesthesia care unit, a short stay unit and a gastrointestinal lab. A full range of inpatient and outpatient services are provided, including general surgical procedures, laparoscopic, endoscopic, orthopedic, gynecological, urologic and ear, nose and throat surgeries.

The competent, caring staff of the department consists of a certified nurse operating room (who is also the nurse manager for surgical services), two staff registered nurses, one certified surgical technologist, and two non-certified surgical technologists. Blackford Community Hospital has one general surgeon and a number of physicians with surgical specialties on staff who perform a variety of surgical procedures using high quality state-of-the art equipment. Anesthesia services are provided by Dr. Donald Hunsberger.

The surgical services team works together to provide the patient with the best possible care from admission through and including discharge.  Even after the patient goes home, follow-up telephone calls are made to ensure patient rights, ethics and satisfaction were maintained throughout the stay. Surgical services staff also verifies the patient's recovery has been uneventful. When problems are identified, however, appropriate referrals are made quickly and efficiently.
