About BMH

nursery pictureBall Memorial Hospital is the flagship of Cardinal Health System, an integrated network of hospitals, diagnostic centers, pharmacies, a primary care physician network, comprehensive rehabilitation services, urgent care centers, and managed care partnerships.

Founded in 1929, BMH serves as a regional tertiary referral center and teaching hospital and the largest non-government employer in East Central Indiana. Ball Memorial is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Brent L. Batman serves as the hospital’s president.

Ball Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit organization. The hospital has 2,500 employees with a payroll exceeding $95 million. It boasts a 260-member clinical staff, which represents more than 45 medical specialties, and approximately 87 percent of that group is board certified, a figure is well above the national average.

Driven by a commitment to excellence, the medical staff receives solid backing from the health system and hospital boards and administration.

As the centerpiece of the system, Ball Memorial Hospital has more than 1.2 million square feet of facilities and offers an array of services. Included among those services are a state-of-the-art, recently constructed emergency department, and comprehensive cancer centers in Muncie and New Castle which provide a broad range of leading edge treatment options such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and clinical trials supported by the national cancer institute.

BMH is also a regional center for open heart surgery and our cardiac program provides diagnostic as well as interventional cardiac and electrophysiology procedures.

In addition, the hospital is recognized as a regional leader for many types of surgery hip and knee replacement procedures offered in conjunction with our Total Joint and Spine Center, and BMH is the only facility between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne to offer a perinatal center and level 3-b neonatal intensive care unit for the care of high-risk pregnancies and newborns. The hospital also operates multiple dialysis centers in Muncie and surrounding communities.

Ball Memorial is dedicated to providing the highest level of quality care to the people of East Central Indiana. This commitment is reflected in clinical performance data that often exceed national benchmarks, and BMH recently received recognition as the best hospital in Indiana for vascular care.

The hospital campus is also home to the Edmund F. Ball Medical Education Center and includes the largest physician teaching program in Indiana outside of Indianapolis, with four residency programs and a total of 60 physicians in training. The hospital is also affiliated with the Indiana school of medicine, and serves as an educational site for the first two years of medical school.

As part of the graduate medical education program, Ball Hospital operates family medicine and internal medicine clinics, which provide low-cost medical care to over 25,000 patients a year.

Hospital officials recently unveiled their vision for the renovation of Ball Memorial Hospital’s patient-centric south wing – a $120 million facility master plan that includes 300,000 square feet of new and revitalized space by 2010. In four years, Ball Memorial Hospital’s footprint will change dramatically with the addition of a new South Tower, expanded surgical suites, patient observation units, improved access to outpatient services, and a move toward a new private-patient-room environment.

In addition to private rooms, patients can look forward to many other enhanced features, The plan has been strategically and logically developed based on research and economic data, anticipated and planned growth throughout the region, and Cardinal Health System’s commitment to supporting the needs of the community for generations to come.
