What is Asthma?
Asthma is a serious, chronic condition of the lungs and airways. Inflammation or swelling restricts the flow of air and can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing and tightness in the chest.
What causes an asthma attack?
Sensitivity to certain substances can bring on an asthma attack. Everyone’s triggers are different. You, your doctor and the asthma educator can work together to figure out what causes your asthma attacks.
What is a peak flow meter?
A Peak Flow Meter is an inexpensive, hand-held device that measures your ability to push air out of your lungs or how air flows from your lungs in one "fast blast."
Many doctors utilize the information they receive from the Peak Flow Meter to adjust and monitor daily medications for asthma.
What are some common triggers for people with asthma?
Smoke from tobacco or wood, pollen from flowers, trees or grasses, animal fur and dander, molds, exercise, dust, strong odors and weather.
How can I contact other people locally with asthma?
An Asthma Support Group is presented by the CHS Asthma Educators on the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Edmund F. Ball Medical Education Center located at 221 N. Celia Ave in Muncie. Everyone is welcome to come and share your concerns, thoughts, feelings and solutions with others dealing with asthma.
What do I need to do to take advantage of the Asthma Education Program at CHS?
Ask your doctor for a referral to Cardinal Health System’s Asthma Education Program.
