Ball Memorial Hospital Wound Healing Center Earns two national awards

The Best is Right Here. Those words carry even greater credence when it comes to the staff at the BMH Wound Healing Center, which has been named the New Center of the Year 2006 by the National Healing Corporation (NHC) and has also been recognized for operating excellence.

NHC provides clinical and business management services along with technology and expertise in wound healing to BMH and other client hospitals nationwide.

“It has been a great accomplishment to reach all of our goals each month in our first year of operation,” said Judy Mansker, program director of the Wound Healing Center. “We have great teamwork, dedication and caring among our physicians, nurses and staff whose reward is filling a great need for our patients.”

The New Center of the Year award recognizes centers open longer than six months which met or exceeded their goals for wound and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) volume for the year. HBO patients breathe pressurized, 100 percent oxygen. The increased oxygen level in blood flow serves to quicken wound healing.

Mansker listed several clinical indicators, including number of patients seen and frequency of meeting or exceeding the center’s 16-week heal rate goal as additional factors in capturing the award.

The Wound Healing Center was also one of 16 hospitals recognized for Operating Excellence for meeting 100 percent of wound care and HBO volume for the year. The center opened in January 2006 and provides state-of-the-art specialized outpatient care to patients with chronic, non-healing wounds and non-responsive conditions. Dr. Alex Cocco serves as medical director and Kathy Cheslik, RN, WOCN, is the clinical nurse manager.
