Clean air fair honors Dr. Nicki Turner

To commemorate World Asthma Month, the third annual Clean Air Fair will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Head Start Action, Inc. at 3900 E. Wysor Street, the former site of Claypool Elementary School in Muncie.

The fair is held in remembrance of Dr. Nicki Turner, a local physician who dedicated her life to providing education about the effects of smoking and asthma to people of all ages, and is a collaboration between BMH Respiratory Services (with funding support from the BMH Foundation), Delaware County, Smokefree Indiana, Medical Consultants, and Head Start Action, Inc.

The Clean Air Fair is free and open to the public, and will feature games, informational booths, face painting, food and prizes, free health screenings and more. Children may learn firefighting and lifesaving skills from McAxe and Kasey the firefighting dog, or visit the climbing wall or moon walk.

“Asthma affects people of all age groupings, from the very young to the older adult, and can be disabling if it is left uncontrolled,” said Sharon Adams, asthma educator, BMH Respiratory Services. “Having knowledge of the disease, the triggers that cause each individual to react, how and when to take medications and when to seek medical attention are the keys to controlling this disease.”

Community supporters of the event include Mittler Gas Supply, Inc., Sepracor, Lincare, Apria and Astra Zeneca and Respironics.

“Our goal is to provide a relaxed, fun day with educational information presented in an enjoyable atmosphere,” Adams said. “We’re hoping it will continue to be an annual and free educational opportunity for the public.”
