Mar 26 , 2008
A pioneer on the East Central Indiana medical community has been honored for his longtime contribution to research.
Dr. William B. Fisher was recognized recently by Ball Memorial Hospital’s Medical Education Department. He was recognized by Kelly Stanley, president and CEO of Cardinal Health System, and Dr. Charles E. Sanders, vice president of Medical Education and Research for the hospital.
The two presented Fisher with a plaque highlighting his accomplishments in conjunction with Fisher’s presentation to a medical resident educational symposium.
Fisher served as the initial director of Oncology and directed the internal medicine residency program at BMH, where his residents included numerous East Central Indiana physicians. As principal investigator for more than 40 protocols at BMH, The Cancer Center at Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball Cancer Center at Forest Ridge in New Castle, Dr. Fisher has assisted in treatment of melanoma, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, lymphomas, Hodgkin’s Disease, breast cancer and renal cell cancer, and is a co-founder of the Hoosier Oncology Group (HOG).
“We are blessed to be among the recipients of Dr. Fisher’s dedication and contributions to his field,” Sanders said. “East Central Indiana owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Fisher for bringing state-of-the-art cancer research clinical trials to our communities, thus allowing patients to receive cutting-edge care here at home instead of having to travel to access it.”
The son of a Henry County physician, Fisher is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed fellowships in Oncology and Hematology at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
